Former PlayStation chief Shuhei Yoshida revealed that Sony was the catalyst that inspired FromSoftware to become a game studio. The company originally produced business software, but witnessing the rise of CD‑ROM technology in the industry convinced them they could develop games as well.
On the My Perfect Console podcast, Yoshida said Sony’s support for CD‑ROM was a decisive factor in FromSoftware’s move into gaming. When they saw PlayStation embracing CD‑ROM, FromSoftware realized they, too, could be a publisher of video games.
A bit of background: Sony initially planned to produce a CD‑ROM add‑on for the SNES, but after Nintendo stepped away from the project, Sony proceeded to create the first PlayStation. That domino effect helped set FromSoftware on the path to becoming the prominent studio it is today.
Today the studio is best known for the Dark Souls series, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring, and its partnership with PlayStation produced Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne for the PS4. Demand for a return to Bloodborne remains strong, yet fans have been waiting years for any official update from PlayStation.
