Sony Increases Prices for PlayStation 5 and Portal

Sony PlayStation 5 and Portal price hike announcement

Sony has officially confirmed a significant price surge for its PlayStation 5 hardware lineup and the PlayStation Portal remote player. These adjustments are scheduled to take effect on April 2, representing the second price hike for the flagship console in under twelve months.

In a recent update on the PlayStation Blog, Sony attributed the move to persistent global economic instability. The company explained that after a thorough assessment of the current financial climate, these increases were deemed essential to sustain their commitment to delivering premium gaming innovation to their global audience.

While these changes primarily impact the US, UK, Europe, and Japan, Sony advises players in other territories to consult local retailers for specific regional pricing updates. Below are the revised figures for the major markets, including a comparison against previous US MSRPs.

Updated Console Pricing

United States

  • PS5: $649.99 (Increased from $549.99)

The handheld streaming device is also seeing a cost adjustment across all regions:

  • U.S.: $249.99 (Up from $199.99)
  • U.K.: £219.99
  • Europe: €249.99
  • Japan: ¥39,980

For those tracking the numbers in the US, the standard PS5 will soon command a premium of $100 to $150 more than before, depending on the specific model. This follows a trend of rising costs; Sony previously adjusted prices in international markets last April and followed up with US increases this past August. To put this in perspective, the PS5 originally launched at $499.99 in 2020; within six years, the entry price has ballooned by approximately $250. Similarly, the PS5 Pro, which debuted in late 2024 at $699, has seen a $200 jump in a remarkably short window.

Sony is not the only manufacturer grappling with these shifts. Throughout 2025, every major hardware provider raised prices, largely driven by global trade policies and international tariffs. Microsoft implemented two separate price hikes for the Xbox Series X/S last May and October, alongside a significant cost increase for Xbox Game Pass.

Meanwhile, Nintendo took the unusual step of delaying Switch 2 pre-orders to navigate the tariff landscape and increased accessory pricing ahead of the new hardware’s release. Nintendo has joined a massive corporate coalition suing the US government to recover funds lost to these tariffs following a Supreme Court ruling. Despite these legal battles, Nintendo also raised the price of legacy Switch models last October, citing the same unavoidable economic pressures.
