Sega’s Streets of Rage Film Lands New Writers and Director

The cinematic adaptation of Sega’s legendary beat ’em up series, Streets of Rage, is finally gaining momentum. First announced back in 2022 under Lionsgate, the project is officially moving forward with fresh creative talent at the helm. In a notable move, the studio has tapped Pat Casey and Josh Miller—the duo responsible for the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog films—to pen the script.
According to a report by Variety, the film will also feature Jeymes Samuel (known for his work on The Harder They Fall) as director. This creative team replaces John Wick scribe Derek Kolstad, who had previously developed an early iteration of the screenplay.
While official plot details remain under wraps, reports suggest the production aims to capture the spirit of the cult-classic arcade brawler, emphasizing its vibrant character roster, iconic synth-heavy soundtracks, and high-octane combat. Given the massive commercial success of Streets of Rage 4, which sold over 2.5 million units following its 2020 release, anticipation for this adaptation remains high.
The transition of Sega properties to the big screen has been incredibly lucrative, with the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise recently eclipsing $1 billion at the global box office. With Sonic the Hedgehog 4 slated for a March 2027 release, Casey and Miller clearly have a proven track record with Sega’s IP. The upcoming Sonic installment promises a star-studded cast, including returning favorites like Jim Carrey and Idris Elba, alongside newcomer Kristin Bell as Amy Rose.
While a release date for Streets of Rage has not yet been confirmed, fans are optimistic. By leveraging Lionsgate’s experience with stylized, visceral action—best seen in the John Wick series—this adaptation has the potential to become a standout in the gaming-to-film genre.
