Silent Hill Creator Pyramid Head Designer Sacrifices Personal Life for Work

Artist Masahiro Ito spent years working on Silent Hill without going on a single date.

Masahiro Ito, the artist known for his work on the Silent Hill series, recently shared posts on social media expressing regret over sacrificing his personal life for his career.

The artist noted that he was immersed in his work on the first three Silent Hill games for eight years, during which time he did not go on a single date with a woman and worked through weekends. Now, he feels that if he had met someone and married back then, he would be happier:

During the 8 years I spent developing Silent Hill 1, 2, and 3 at Konami, I gave up on trying to get a girlfriend. I didn’t even go on a single date. I sacrificed my weekends and slept on cardboard laid out on the floor […] To be honest, lately I’ve been thinking: if I hadn’t sacrificed my personal life and instead found a girlfriend and gotten married when I was young, I probably would have been happier.

In response, Masahiro Ito shared that he sometimes meets couples with young children and feels a little envious:

I am 54 years old now, haha, so I’ve pretty much given up on the idea of getting married. Still, when I see people with their young children in supermarkets or places like that looking like they are truly having a good time, I feel a slight sense of envy.
