Shostakovich Biopic “Noise of Time” to Open Mayak Film Festival

The opening film for the fourth Mayak Festival of Contemporary Russian Cinema has been announced: Alexei Uchitel’s biographical drama, Noise of Time.

The film explores the life and artistic evolution of composer Dmitri Shostakovich, with Oleg Savtsov, known for his work in the series Plevako, taking on the lead role.

“Noise of Time is not merely a biopic, but a parable about a genius whose destiny mirrored the profound contradictions of the past century, offering us a window into its greater meanings. It depicts a meteoric rise to fame, followed by a sudden collapse—only to rise even higher and endure further trials. This is a story about a man standing at the edge of an abyss, centered on a remarkable paradox: the more unstable his world became, the more powerful his music grew,”

The ensemble cast also features Yevgeny and Polina Tsyganov, Danila Kozlovsky, Nikita Kologrivy, Maria Smolnikova, Lev Zulkarnaev, Darya Balabanova, and others. Noise of Time is scheduled for a Russian theatrical release on November 26.

The Mayak festival will take place from October 3 to 8 in Gelendzhik. The full competition program will be revealed at a later date. Last year’s Mayak Grand Prix was awarded to the dramedy Yura Was Here, starring Konstantin Khabensky.
