Sea of Thieves to Receive Live-Action Adaptation

Action-packed scene from Sea of Thieves

Rare’s beloved multiplayer nautical odyssey, Sea of Thieves, is officially charting a course for the big screen. According to an exclusive report from Entertainment Weekly, the game is being developed into a live-action feature film, marking a major milestone in Microsoft’s ongoing strategy to adapt its iconic gaming intellectual properties for film and television.

While the project is currently in its early stages without a confirmed director, it has secured a heavy-hitter in producer Destin Daniel Cretton. Best known for helming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Cretton will spearhead the production through his banner, Hisako. Cretton also brings television experience to the table as a co-creator of the Disney+ series Wonder Man.

Details regarding the narrative remain under wraps, but Xbox content chief Matt Booty offered a glimpse into the creative philosophy behind the project. “The core of Sea of Thieves isn’t defined by a specific protagonist or a linear plot; it’s defined by the players and the community,” Booty explained. “The film aims to capture that unique, cooperative social spirit that has become the hallmark of the game’s identity.”

Since its 2018 debut on Xbox and PC, Sea of Thieves has evolved from a simple pirate sandbox into a massive, thriving open-world experience. Despite a rocky initial launch, the title has benefited from years of consistent content updates, eventually expanding its reach to the PlayStation 5 in 2024. Fans can catch a glimpse of the game’s current state in the latest Season 20 trailer below:

The Sea of Thieves announcement is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. As part of its 25th-anniversary coverage, EW highlighted that over a dozen projects based on Xbox franchises are currently in development. This ambitious slate includes a follow-up to A Minecraft Movie, live-action adaptations of Call of Duty and Gears of War, and further expansions for the Fallout universe, including a third season of the hit Amazon series and a reality show based on Fallout Shelter. Additionally, a Wolfenstein series and a Netflix-produced Minecraft animated show are currently in the works.

This news arrives during a complex period for Xbox, as the company faces scrutiny regarding recent reports of significant layoffs and the potential shuttering of studios like Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory.
