Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Creator Discusses DLSS and Defends Technology

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II creator Daniel Vavra has defended the use of NVIDIA DLSS 5 after PC players and modders began experimenting with the technology in various games.

Recently, PC gamers gained access to the NVIDIA DLSS 5 library after modders extracted the necessary files from NBA 2K27. Enthusiasts quickly started applying the technology to a wide range of titles, including Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.

Reactions to these experiments vary. While some users appreciate the resulting visuals, others view the changes with alarm and dismiss them as AI slop.

Game creator Daniel Vavra took notice of the experiments involving Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and decided to test the technology himself. He liked the results and has begun defending the tool.

Vavra pointed to a character head model as an example, explaining that the NVIDIA technology improves the image without altering the geometry:

Some people are literally losing their minds. On the left in the picture is a head ruined by a very limited game engine lighting system that cannot properly display shadows, skin texture, and normal map details. On the right is THE EXACT SAME MODEL WITHOUT ANY GEOMETRY CHANGES, looking exactly like a render from ZBrush—where the 3D artist modeled it—only with better lighting, shadows, skin texture, hair, and consequently details. This is made possible by neural rendering in DLSS 5. And then some random lunatic on the internet writes: "THIS IS AI SLOP! I WANT THE ORIGINAL CREATIVE VISION."

Daniel Vavra stated that the head models were 3D-scanned from real people using photogrammetry and then refined by artists:

I am the creative director of the game. This is our original creative vision, and [the model] looks like the static renders of ZBrush models when we were creating them. Or like real people [who were scanned]. The lack of helmet shadows on faces and the distorted normal map rendering WERE NOT OUR ORIGINAL CREATIVE INTENT. People are simply crazy.
