Ryan Gosling’s Drive Is Now Streaming for Free
Ryan Gosling has built a career on wide-ranging roles. In Project Hail Mary, he plays Ryland Grace with a silent, heroic awkwardness, whereas films like Fracture (2007) and Blue Valentine (2010) showcase a much more abrasive edge. Projects such as The Nice Guys (2016) and Half Nelson (2006) further highlight his adaptability across genres, earning him critical acclaim across several decades, even if The Fall Guy struggled at the box office.
Among his most distinct performances is director Nicolas Winding Refn‘s 2011 neo-noir thriller Drive. After premiering at Cannes to widespread praise, the film achieved commercial success despite its graphic violence and arthouse tone. Audiences can currently stream Drive for free on Pluto TV.
The story centers on an unnamed Los Angeles resident known only as The Driver (Gosling), who works as an auto mechanic, a Hollywood stunt double, and a getaway driver. A gentle bond develops between him, his neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), and her young son. When Irene’s husband, Standard (Oscar Isaac), returns from prison, he recruits The Driver for a high-stakes, million-dollar heist intended to clear protection debts owed to local criminals. The job goes awry, pulling everyone into intense danger.

Refn’s catalog often relies on high-contrast lighting, electronic scores, and heavy symbolism, as seen in projects like Only God Forgives (2013), The Neon Demon (2016), and the streaming series Copenhagen Cowboy. In Drive, the filmmaker applies notable restraint, pairing a spare narrative with the glowing backdrop of nighttime Los Angeles.
With minimal dialogue throughout, the film focuses on themes of urban isolation and survival. The Driver carries an understated, polite demeanor that contrasts sharply with sudden outbursts of extreme brutality. Gosling relies on an internalized performance to capture a character who desires a peaceful life but remains trapped by his own capacity for violence.

Rather than leaning on conventional romance tropes, Drive keeps the connection between Irene and The Driver grounded against harsh realities. Refn uses extended stretches of silence to build tension before breaking it with visceral sequences, from a close-quarters motel ambush to high-speed car chases.
Drive stands as a sharp showcase for Gosling’s understated screen presence, blending deliberate pacing with stylized crime action.
