Rumor: Microsoft Employee Blocked Anime Games on Xbox for Years Due to Personal Bias
Windows Central journalist Jez Corden reports that a Microsoft employee spent years blocking anime games from launching on Xbox due to a personal dislike of the genre, and previously rejected projects have started receiving approval following leadership changes.
During a recent episode of the Xbox Two podcast, the Windows Central journalist discussed why Xbox declined to release certain titles in recent years, including Gal Gun.
I’ve talked to a lot of people who used to work at the company or still work there, trying to figure out why some games were banned on Xbox. Among fans of a certain genre, especially anime dating sims, there’s a conspiracy theory. Microsoft has long had a notorious library gap: games like this exist on PlayStation, Nintendo, and Steam, but not on Xbox.
The community suspected that Microsoft was blocking these games. It turns out that everything is probably not that far from the conspiracy theory. Apparently, there was a person at Xbox who hated anime games and rejected them. I heard about this, but I’m treating the information with caution since this is just an industry rumor.
According to Corden, some previously rejected games started receiving approval following leadership changes. He agreed with the assumption that a single person may have abused their authority.
