The actor’s recent post has sparked a wave of discussion about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and potential roles for Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr. has once again given fans cause to speculate about Tony Stark’s fate. On Thanksgiving the actor shared an illustration on social media showing Doctor Doom and Iron Man breaking a wishbone “for luck.” There was no caption, but that was enough to ignite online talk about a possible Iron Man comeback.
Downey is officially confirmed to play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Judgment Day, which is slated to premiere on December 18, 2026. In that context, the image featuring Iron Man fueled theories that the actor could portray two characters at once or even reappear as Tony Stark in forthcoming projects, including Secret Wars, whose production is expected to begin in 2026.
Some fans have bolstered their conjectures with purported insider leaks. According to those reports, Doctor Doom is intent on eliminating any interference in the timeline and the multiverse, which could trigger a kind of reset into the past.
For now, these remain only theories. Marvel has declined to comment on the post and appears intent on keeping details about an expanded cast or additional roles under wraps until closer to release.
