Resident Evil Requiem Proves Physical Discs Are Still Popular
Strong sales data for Resident Evil Requiem highlights ongoing consumer demand for physical media, even as reports of Sony planning to fully phase out physical discs by 2028 spark industry debate.
Although Capcom reports that digital downloads account for 90% of its overall game sales, the breakdown for Resident Evil Requiem tells a different story. According to The Game Business journalist Christopher Dring, physical discs made up 22% of sales in the United States, 55% in France, and 51% in Japan.
In the United Kingdom, physical copies represented 40% of sales, while Australia recorded 43%. Out of more than 7 million total copies sold worldwide, at least 2 million were boxed physical versions.

Immediately following the title’s launch, boxed copies of Resident Evil Requiem quickly sold out across retail shelves worldwide, signaling that substantial demand for physical game discs remains intact.
