Kingdom Hearts to Get Anime Adaptation with New Story by Tetsuya Nomura
Disney has officially greenlit an animated series based on Kingdom Hearts, bringing an original story to the screen that expands the video game universe. Series creator Tetsuya Nomura and fellow Square Enix staff members are actively involved in the adaptation’s development.
Ayo Davis, President of Disney Kids & Family, emphasized that the creative team is collaborating closely with Nomura to maintain the core identity of the franchise:
“Kingdom Hearts has captivated players around the world with its unique blend of adventure and fantasy. It is especially exciting to take a world that fans have explored for years in games and bring it to life in a completely new way. Our creative team is working closely with the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, ensuring the new series remains unmistakably Kingdom Hearts while giving fans a fresh perspective on a beloved world.”
Along with the announcement, Disney released a first-look image showing Sora with his Keyblade. Other details remain limited. Disney has not revealed the rest of the cast or confirmed whether the storyline will tie into the upcoming Kingdom Hearts IV.
The series will air on Disney Channel and stream on Disney+, though Disney has not yet announced a premiere date.

Kingdom Hearts debuted in 2002, uniting characters across Square Enix, Disney, and Pixar properties. Since its launch, the franchise has sold more than 39 million copies worldwide.
