Before Johnny sees the future, Stephen King destroys his present

King frequently subjects his protagonists to deep misfortune. Novelist Paul Sheldon, played by James Caan, is held captive by an obsessive fan in Misery. When Stillson becomes Johnny’s primary focus, the clairvoyant mechanics recede into the background. The earlier serial killer investigation and the visions serve to push Johnny toward a solitary, difficult decision.

The film endures because its most unsettling aspect is not the supernatural premise, but the absence of a clean, painless resolution. King uses extraordinary occurrences to place ordinary people under profound pressure, and Cronenberg stays committed to that central human conflict.
