High-profile broadcast events—namely The Game Awards, Summer Game Fest, and Gamescom Opening Night Live—remain the pinnacle of industry visibility. However, for mid-tier studios striving to capture global attention, the barrier to entry has become astronomical. Bulkhead, the development team behind the tactical Steam Early Access shooter Wardogs, recently discovered this firsthand when seeking a modest 60-second trailer spot in a premier showcase.
During an open discussion regarding their marketing strategy, Bulkhead CEO Joe Brammer and UI/UX designer Howard Philpott disclosed that they were quoted an exorbitant $300,000 for a single minute of airtime. Faced with the prospect of spending a substantial portion of their budget just to be sandwiched between celebrity appearances and massive AAA blockbusters, the studio pivoted entirely, conceiving their own dedicated broadcast: The FPS Games Show.
“We obviously needed to get Wardogs out there, so we were assessing the calendar for upcoming showcases, and genuine options were scarce,” Brammer shared. “We weren’t particularly keen on dropping $300,000 for 60 seconds, especially when you’re competing for attention against massive single-player juggernauts and celebrity cameos.”
While the developers refrained from naming the specific event, the scheduling aligns almost certainly with Gamescom’s Opening Night Live. Interestingly, this $300,000 quote sits below the reported $450,000 baseline demanded by The Game Awards, providing rare transparency into the escalating costs of top-tier industry marketing slots.
Rather than acquiescing to those steep rates, Bulkhead mobilized fellow creators across the first-person shooter sphere. The response was immediate and enthusiastic, drawing interest from prominent projects including Escape from Tarkov, Gray Zone Warfare, and Beautiful Light—alongside major industry support from Ubisoft with Rainbow Six Siege.
In stark contrast to traditional commercial showcases, participation in The FPS Games Show is completely free of charge. The event operates on two fundamental rules: the featured title must belong to the first-person shooter genre, and the presentation must deliver exclusive reveals or gameplay.
Philpott emphasized the authentic, no-nonsense ethos driving the presentation: “It’s a genuine showcase. No awkward sketches, no musical detours—strictly FPS games crafted by FPS developers, tailored directly for FPS enthusiasts.”
Audiences can catch the inaugural broadcast of The FPS Games Show live via Twitch at 2:00 PM ET on Thursday, September 3. Additional details and participant announcements are available on the event’s official website.
