The finale of Kenji Nakamura’s animated movie trilogy arrives soon. Fans of Demon Slayer awaiting the next entry in the Infinity Castle film series will find similar visual depth, memorable characters, and battles against supernatural threats in Mononoke. The closing chapter, Mononoke The Movie: Chapter III — The Curse of the Serpent, premieres globally on Netflix on Sept. 29.

Mononoke originated in the early 2000s as a television anime series. The story centered on an enigmatic protagonist known only as the Medicine Seller, who traveled to exorcise spirits called mononoke. Its distinct aesthetic mirrored traditional ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The television run followed “the demon-slaying Poirot of the Edo period” across various locations, but Nakamura’s film trilogy confines the Medicine Seller to the Ōoku, the secluded quarters where concubines and handmaidens serve the imperial court.

The upcoming film follows the groundwork laid by Mononoke the Movie: The Phantom in the Rain in 2024 and Mononoke the Movie: Chapter II — The Ashes of Rage in 2025. In The Curse of the Serpent, the Medicine Seller investigates the Midaidokoro, the wife of the shogun and the most powerful woman residing in the Ōoku. Because mononoke materialize from intense human resentment and emotional turmoil, the shogun’s wife becomes a natural focal point for spiritual disturbance.

Each entry in the trilogy explores the internal hierarchies and suffering of women at different tiers of the Ōoku. The Phantom in the Rain examined a newcomer named Asa as she tried to navigate the ranks, while The Ashes of Rage tackled the ruthless politics surrounding imperial succession. Alongside the supernatural mysteries, the exploration of court politics and personal sacrifice anchors the trilogy.

Mononoke The Movie: Chapter III — The Curse of the Serpent debuts Sept. 29 on Netflix, where the first two films are currently streaming.
