PlayStation’s Shock Cancellation of Kojima’s New Game Now Makes Perfect Sense
Earlier this week, Hideo Kojima announced that Kojima Productions’ highly anticipated project, Physint, has transitioned from PlayStation to Xbox. In a recent statement shared on X, Kojima revealed that PlayStation officially canceled the espionage thriller back in June, forcing the studio to seek an alternative publishing partner. “Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward,” he assured fans.
A comprehensive report published Friday by Bloomberg detailed the factors behind PlayStation’s decision to drop Physint—originally unveiled during a 2024 State of Play showcase as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear. According to the publication, mounting budgetary concerns and underperforming sales figures for Death Stranding played a pivotal role in the cancellation.
Industry insiders told Bloomberg that Physint was rapidly exceeding its financial projections despite being years away from completion, alongside missed internal deadlines. Furthermore, because Physint was not slated to be a permanent platform exclusive, PlayStation leadership was increasingly hesitant to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into a venture destined to launch on rival systems—a strategy mirrored by Kojima Productions’ multi-platform approach with the Death Stranding franchise.
Historically, Kojima Productions collaborated with 505 Games to bring the inaugural Death Stranding to Windows PC, Xbox Series X, and mobile devices. Because Sony has gradually shifted away from funding single-player ports for personal computers, publishing Physint externally would have left Sony without a cut of the profits generated across alternative ecosystems.
Data from Alinea Analytics indicates that both Death Stranding and its follow-up, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, fell short of Sony’s lofty commercial benchmarks. On the Beach has currently moved roughly 2.5 million units—split between 1.8 million on PlayStation 5 and the remainder on Steam. By comparison, the original title achieved 5 million sales within a matching timeframe, eventually touching 19 million participants over a five-year lifespan via promotions like Xbox Game Pass and the Epic Games Store. Alinea estimates the franchise’s collective earnings at roughly $413 million against estimated production costs totaling $250 to $300 million.
The collaborative partnership between Sony and Kojima stretches back to the historic 1998 launch of Metal Gear Solid on the original PlayStation, renewing swiftly following Kojima’s departure from Konami. However, as Bloomberg highlights, “many of the PlayStation executives who had close relationships with Kojima have left the company in recent years.”
Kojima is clearly forging fresh ties with Xbox, having already teamed up with Microsoft on the upcoming horror title OD. “We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX,” newly appointed Xbox CEO Asha Sharma stated.
Both Bloomberg and Alinea Analytics emphasized that Sony’s costly missteps with live-service initiatives—most notably the catastrophic launch of Concord—heavily influenced executive decision-making. These high-profile blunders have prompted PlayStation to enforce much stricter oversight and production milestones, sources suggest.
While it is understandable that a more financially cautious Sony would step away from an expensive venture after previous releases underperformed, the move damages their public image, especially amidst an ongoing public relations challenge concerning their plans to phase out physical discs by 2028.
Fortunately, Physint has secured a promising new home with Microsoft. However, given that Xbox is currently navigating waves of widespread layoffs affecting thousands of workers, industry observers are naturally questioning how the company secured the substantial capital required to fund a massive Kojima production.
