PlatinumGames Developing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, First Trailer Released

The Last Ronin TMNT action game reveal

Paramount has officially launched Paramount Games Studio, a strategic initiative designed to translate its expansive library of intellectual properties into compelling interactive experiences. One of the studio’s flagship projects is the highly anticipated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. While we have known for some time that this adaptation was in the works, the debut trailer has finally confirmed that PlatinumGames—the acclaimed developer behind Bayonetta and Nier: Automata—is helming the project.

This collaboration marks a return to the franchise for the Osaka-based studio, which previously developed 2016’s TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan. However, The Last Ronin represents a significant shift in tone. Based on the celebrated comic book series, this AAA action-adventure title centers on the final surviving member of the Turtle brotherhood as they embark on a gritty quest for retribution. The project was officially unveiled during the recent Summer Game Fest showcase.

“Compelling storytelling is the cornerstone of any enduring franchise, and video games offer an unparalleled medium for fans to fully immerse themselves in these narratives,” stated Shawn Kittelsen, Senior Vice President and Head of Creative and Production at Paramount Games. “By unifying our creative vision across all divisions, we are building interconnected worlds where the narrative serves as the foundation. The Last Ronin is the perfect embodiment of that philosophy.”

The new division is staffed by a veteran team with deep roots in the industry. Kittelsen is joined by executives boasting experience from major players like EA, Unity, and Sony, including Dan Prigg, Andrea Silvers, Kara Bilkiss, and Ray Davis. This team aims to pivot from treating games as mere brand extensions to positioning them as a central pillar of Paramount’s content strategy, standing alongside their film and television efforts.

While industry terminology often leans toward the corporate, the partnership with PlatinumGames is a genuine reason for excitement. As we await more details, you can catch up on our exclusive interview with TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman regarding the transition of this somber tale to gaming, or explore our deep dive into the extensive history of Ninja Turtles video games.
