Paramount Delays Violent “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin”, Offers “Sonic-ified” Replacement

Paramount pivots toward family audiences with the producer behind Fast & Furious and Sonic the Hedgehog.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, after closing its deal with Skydance and installing David Ellison as studio head, Paramount has scrapped one of the most anticipated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles projects in recent years.

The R-rated adaptation of the graphic novel The Last Ronin, conceived for adult viewers, has been officially shelved. The film was intended to be the franchise’s first live-action entry in a decade, following the lone surviving Turtle as he seeks vengeance for his fallen brothers.

THR reports the new Paramount team rejected the project’s bloody, grim tone and chose to reboot the concept from scratch. The studio is now placing its bets on Neal H. Moritz, producer of the Fast & Furious franchise and the Sonic the Hedgehog films — aiming to replicate the success of family-oriented franchises. For that reason the decision to abandon The Last Ronin has already been labeled “sonic-ification.”

Still, a THR source says the door to The Last Ronin remains “slightly ajar”: Paramount could revisit the project down the line if it deems it worthwhile.

Earlier, the studio also canceled the next installment of the animated series Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; however, the feature animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 is still scheduled for release on September 17, 2027.
