Microsoft Updates Xbox Series X and S with 1440p Output and New Features

Microsoft has started testing a major Xbox Series X|S update in the Xbox Insider program that adds Remote Play streaming at resolutions up to 1440p, background game downloads during cloud gaming, and other features.

Microsoft is testing a major Xbox Series X|S update that improves Remote Play, game downloads, voice chat, and the console interface.

These new features are already available to Xbox Insider participants. Users can now choose console startup animations featuring themes from different Xbox generations, ranging from Xbox One to modern devices, as well as toggle sound separately.

The main change involves Remote Play. Microsoft is testing streaming at up to 1440p resolution with an increased bitrate, which should improve image clarity and gameplay smoothness on supported devices. An additional subscription is still not required for this feature.

Additionally, game and update downloads can now continue in the background during cloud gaming if the connection allows. Voice Clarity is enabled by default in party chats and most games starting in 2020, reducing background noise and making voices clearer.

The update is rounded out by local game and achievement search, the ability to feature up to five earned badges in your profile, and the option to hide individual designations.
