Nintendo President Addresses Pokémon Trading Card Game Scalping Crisis

Nintendo is officially acknowledging that the rampant scalping of the Pokémon Trading Card Game has become a significant liability. In recent years, the secondary market has exploded, with collectors facing exorbitant price hikes. Even major retail outlets like GameStop have been caught inflating the costs of highly coveted TCG inventory. The issue has reached a boiling point, finally forcing Nintendo to address the situation directly with its shareholders.

During a recent annual general meeting, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa faced pointed questions regarding how the company intends to combat aggressive bulk-buying and price gouging. Furukawa confirmed that both Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are keenly aware of the crisis and are implementing strategies—such as moving toward made-to-order production—to stabilize the market.

“Regarding the Pokémon Trading Card Game managed by The Pokémon Company, our equity-method affiliate, we recognize that limited-edition cards are frequently being purchased in bulk, fueling unfair resale practices,” Furukawa stated. “In response, The Pokémon Company is rolling out various safeguards, including made-to-order sales and stronger agreements with marketplace platforms. We are also exploring more robust verification processes for online lotteries, potentially incorporating Japan’s ‘My Number Card’ identification system to ensure fair distribution.”

While some of these initiatives, such as stricter ID requirements in Japan, were already anticipated, it is a relief to see Nintendo formally acknowledging the severity of the scalping epidemic. However, it is somewhat disheartening that Furukawa appeared to distance the parent company from the front-line battle, largely placing the burden of resolution on The Pokémon Company.

“Nintendo maintains ongoing dialogue with The Pokémon Company to ensure products reach genuine consumers effectively,” Furukawa added. “We remain confident that they will continue to deploy the necessary measures to curb this predatory behavior.”

Ultimately, one would hope for a more proactive stance from Nintendo in shielding the community from these predatory tactics. The current climate makes collecting a needlessly expensive and stressful endeavor. That said, the fact that investors are now actively tracking this issue is a promising sign that pressure on management to protect the hobby will only increase.
