Nintendo’s upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time brings a dramatically different look to the Nintendo 64 classic. Nearly three decades after the first 3D Zelda adventure debuted, the Switch 2 version features more than a graphical overhaul: its distinctive character designs have also divided some longtime fans.

In a developer interview, the team explained the thinking behind those choices, including why Link, Zelda, and other characters have a puppet-like appearance rather than a strictly photorealistic one.

Art director Aya Shida said the team initially considered using the Switch 2’s capabilities to create a richly detailed world that felt believable. Realism alone, however, was never the goal.

Shida recalled how the original game paired a beautiful but sometimes dark Hyrule with colorful, eccentric characters. In her view, that contrast helped give Ocarina of Time its mysterious, dreamlike atmosphere.

For the remake, the artists sought to preserve that feeling while building a denser, more convincing Hyrule. A central challenge was making the game’s unusual characters feel at home in their more detailed surroundings.

The team took inspiration from puppet shows and the tactile quality of practical effects in film. Shida said those approaches offered a way to make fantastical characters feel as though they genuinely belonged in their worlds, while also evoking the nostalgia associated with the original game.

To develop the concept, the artists sketched Link, Zelda, and other characters while creating a lifelike 3D model of the Great Deku Tree. They refined its lighting and textures before presenting the combination of characters and environment to series producer Eiji Aonuma.

Aonuma said the approach made sense to him as a member of the original development team. When Nintendo created the Nintendo 64 game, he explained, its developers saw their work as cutting-edge rather than nostalgic. Years later, the current team’s affection for the original helped inspire the remake’s analog, puppet-show aesthetic.

Players will be able to explore the reimagined Hyrule when The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time arrives on Nintendo Switch 2.
