Ninja Theory Officially Cancels Experimental Horror Game Project Mara

Following their appearance at the 2026 Summer Xbox Games Showcase, Ninja Theory, the powerhouse behind the Hellblade series, has officially unveiled their next action-adventure title, Senua. However, amid the excitement surrounding this new project, the studio has confirmed the quiet cancellation of Project Mara, an experimental psychological horror game that was first teased back in 2020.

In a detailed interview with the Xbox Wire blog, studio head Dom Matthews clarified the team’s shift in priorities. While previous entries in the Hellblade franchise were developed by smaller internal pods, the studio is now unifying its entire workforce—comprising 85 creative professionals—to focus exclusively on the development of Senua.

Addressing the status of the abandoned project, Matthews noted, “With the entire team dedicated to this new game, I imagine some might wonder about Project Mara. I made the difficult decision to discontinue its development. These choices are never easy, but I wanted to ensure that all the talent and expertise within the studio are channeled into maximizing the potential of the Senua universe.”

While the cancellation may come as a disappointment to those who were intrigued by Project Mara’s unique premise, it marks a definitive end to years of speculation regarding the project, which had remained largely silent since its initial announcement six years ago.
