The gaming industry is reeling from reports that Xbox intends to scale back its internal development operations significantly. Several prominent studios, including Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory, are reportedly on the chopping block. The news concerning Ninja Theory is particularly jarring, as the studio unveiled Senua—the latest entry in the Hellblade franchise—during the Xbox Games Showcase less than a fortnight ago.
However, industry journalist Stephen Totilo, writing for Game File, suggests this high-profile reveal may have been a calculated move rather than a sign of stability. Citing anonymous sources familiar with Microsoft’s internal strategy, the report alleges that Xbox had already determined the fate of Ninja Theory before the announcement. The intention behind unveiling the game was reportedly to boost the studio’s market appeal to potential investors ahead of a planned divestment or closure. It remains unclear whether Ninja Theory’s own management team was privy to these underlying motives.
While an official statement from Microsoft or the affected studios has yet to materialize, The Verge has indicated that Ninja Theory may already be in the process of shuttering and actively seeking a buyer. These developments align with the broader “strategic reset” recently championed by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and Chief Content Officer Matt Booty, which signals a period of substantial restructuring and workforce reductions across the company.
Senua is currently positioned as an ambitious action-adventure evolution of the Hellblade series, promising a greater emphasis on visceral combat mechanics. The title is slated for a 2027 release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
