Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is drawing heavy inspiration from Counter-Strike by introducing an innovative multiplayer mode centered around a match-based economy. Titled “Collateral,” this fresh playlist integrates a financial system into the traditional Search and Destroy framework, transforming the classic tactical experience into high-stakes matches where every elimination and financial investment carries immense weight.

Activision officially unveiled Collateral via a recent developer blog primarily highlighting the PC architecture of Modern Warfare 4. Alongside the mode’s introduction, the developers confirmed a robust suite of PC optimizations, featuring over 800 granular customization settings, an integrated performance benchmarking tool, and native compatibility with cutting-edge visual technologies like DLSS 4.5 and AMD FSR Redstone.

Nevertheless, Collateral stands out as the most compelling addition for tactical shooter enthusiasts who appreciate deep resource management mechanics.

How Collateral works

At its foundational level, Collateral reimagines the classic Search and Destroy ruleset. Two opposing squads take turns attacking and defending designated bomb sites. However, rather than spawning with predetermined loadouts, operatives begin each match equipped solely with a sidearm, forcing them to finance their arsenal through combat performance.

Participants accumulate currency by neutralizing opponents and completing match objectives. This capital is then spent between rounds on defensive plating, tactical perks, specialized equipment, and heavier weaponry. The extensive purchasing catalog includes flashbangs, Riot Shields, diverse sidearms, tactical shotguns, light machine guns, submachine guns, assault rifles, and precision sniper rifles. Furthermore, squads can synergize their funds collectively to secure a UAV reconnaissance advantage.

Additionally, the playlist purposefully strips away several arcade mechanics that typically define the franchise. Respawn capabilities, Killstreaks, passive health regeneration, and custom pre-match loadouts are entirely absent. Perishing in combat results in the permanent loss of acquired gear, though any remaining monetary savings roll over into subsequent rounds. This careful balancing act elevates Collateral far above standard variants of Search and Destroy, granting Modern Warfare 4 a refined competitive meta infused with economic consequences.
