The highly anticipated anthology series based on Ubisoft’s legendary Far Cry franchise has recruited a heavyweight to its ensemble. FX confirmed on Tuesday that acclaimed character actor Steve Buscemi (Fargo, Reservoir Dogs) has officially joined the project, placing him alongside previously announced stars Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Lizzy Caplan (Cloverfield).
While details regarding Buscemi’s specific character remain under wraps, his involvement is a significant coup for the series. The show is being helmed by McElhenney and visionary executive producer Noah Hawley, the creative force behind Fargo and Alien: Earth. FX emphasized that the adaptation will maintain the game franchise’s core identity, utilizing an anthology format that explores fresh settings and a revolving cast of characters in each new season.
Viewers will be able to stream Far Cry via FX and Hulu, with an international release slated for Disney Plus. Although the show was first teased in November 2025, a firm premiere date has yet to be finalized.
“Working under Noah Hawley is a career highlight,” McElhenney remarked following the initial announcement. “Ubisoft has been incredibly trusting, allowing us to build upon one of the most immersive and iconic worlds in gaming history.”
“What makes the Far Cry series so compelling is its anthology nature—it allows for distinct variations on a central theme, much like my work on Fargo,” Hawley added. “I’m thrilled to team up with Rob to bring an ambitious, irreverent, and deeply human action series to life.”
The franchise most recently saw the release of Far Cry 6 in 2021, which featured a chilling performance by Giancarlo Esposito as the dictator Antón Castillo. The series has long been celebrated for its blend of gritty political intrigue, unhinged antagonists, and high-octane spectacle.
Buscemi’s inclusion adds to an illustrious four-decade career. Beyond his iconic film roles in The Big Lebowski and Reservoir Dogs, he has delivered unforgettable television performances in The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, and 30 Rock. Recently, he appeared in Netflix’s Wednesday and is set to star in the upcoming Martin McDonagh feature, Wild Horse Nine.
