Netflix Won’t Show the Stranger Things Finale in Theaters

Stranger Things returns for its fifth and final season later this year: Netflix will release the first four episodes on November 26, 2025 (perfect timing to disappear into the couch over Thanksgiving), the next three episodes arrive on December 25, 2025, and the series concludes with a feature-length finale on December 31, 2025. That closing episode runs roughly two hours — long enough to feel like a movie — but fans hoping for a big-screen sendoff will be disappointed.

The show’s creators, Ross and Matt Duffer, told Variety that they asked Netflix to give the finale a theatrical window. With episode runtimes already stretching longer than past seasons, the brothers argued the material deserved to be seen at the highest possible picture and sound quality and enjoyed together with other viewers in a communal setting.

Netflix’s chief creative officer, Bela Bajaria, declined that proposal, noting that Stranger Things reaches an enormous global audience on the service and that the series has thrived as a streaming phenomenon. Releasing the finale on Netflix, she said, feeds the conversation and community that already surround the show.

Bajaria’s point has weight: season 4 of Stranger Things ranks third on Netflix’s list of most-watched TV shows ever, with 1,838,000,000 hours viewed, trailing only Wednesday (season 1) and the limited British drama Adolescence. It was also the first English-language series on the platform to surpass one billion hours streamed. (See Netflix’s Top 10 for details.)

Still, Netflix has experimented with theatrical rollouts before — most notably with KPop Demon Hunters, which found box-office success after the show’s popularity exploded — so some observers found it surprising that the streamer passed on a theatrical outing for Stranger Things. For now, the finale will premiere where the vast majority of its audience watches: on Netflix.
