Netflix and Mojang Deny Cancellation Rumors, Confirm Minecraft Animated Series Remains in Development

Fans were alarmed by a prolonged silence regarding the fate of the project.

Netflix and Mojang announced a Minecraft animated series in May 2024 to coincide with the game’s 15th anniversary. In 2025, Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander, who previously worked on the animated film Next Gen, were appointed as showrunners, while the writing team was led by Marvel’s What If…? writer Ashley Bradley. At the same time, Australian studio Flying Bark Productions joined the project to handle the animation.

News about the animated series stopped after that. The project missed Netflix’s presentation at the Annecy Festival in 2026, and the companies have not shown a single new image or trailer over the past year. The extended silence sparked rumors about the possible cancellation of the show.

The publication What’s on Netflix reached out directly to Netflix for comment. A representative for the service assured journalists that the animated series is still in development and production is moving forward on schedule. Public confirmation from Mojang followed shortly after. Minecraft creative director Jens Bergensten replied to a fan on Bluesky:

According to an estimate by What’s on Netflix, production could stretch into 2028. The animated series does not have an official release date.
