Mike Flanagan Developing Carrie Series for Prime Video

Stephen King published Carrie in 1974 as his very first novel. That book launched his writing career and inspired multiple screen adaptations, placing Carrie into a variety of different settings.

Mike Flanagan directed projects like Midnight Mass and Doctor Sleep. His new eight-episode adaptation brings Carrie White to modern-day America and arrives on Prime Video in October.

Carrie White feels out of place in her public high school and faces the horrors of social media in Prime Video’s Carrie miniseries. Summer H. Howell plays the role. Due to her strict upbringing, Carrie remains similar to her depiction in the original novel and previous adaptations as a naive young girl entering a hostile environment. Gossip and pranks are not her only threats. Bullies still share the same intentions, but they find new ways to shame her through digital technology. Cyberbullying did not exist in earlier iterations of Carrie.

The famous locker room scene appears in the first full trailer for Carrie, with students pulling out phones to record the event. The mean girls subsequently create an Instagram account to troll Carrie further and share the videos.

Carrie also stars series regulars Samantha Sloyan from The Pitt as Margaret White, Siena Agudong from Resident Evil as Sue Snell, Amber Midthunder from Prey as Miss Desjardin, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, and Matthew Lillard from Man of Tomorrow as Principal Grayle. Guest stars include Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Tim Bagley, and Heather Graham.

Mike Flanagan has prior experience with Stephen King adaptations, but this project marks a major milestone. Carrie was King’s first published novel and endures as one of his most prominent works. Brian De Palma’s 1976 film adaptation starring Sissy Spacek remains the definitive version for many viewers. Expectations run high, but Flanagan has the background to guide the miniseries to success.

Fans can watch Carrie soon since the series arrives on Prime Video this fall. All eight episodes of Flanagan’s adaptation premiere on Oct. 7.
