Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella outlined the company’s vision for the next-generation Xbox. In an interview with TBPN he said the forthcoming console will rethink conventional platform boundaries and fuse characteristics of both PCs and consoles.
Nadella reminded that Microsoft became the largest publisher after acquiring Activision Blizzard, and now aspires to be “an exceptional publisher” whose games appear “everywhere and on every platform.” He noted the company regards Steam as a direct rival to Xbox, yet aims to advance its own ecosystem through games and services.
Discussing the new Xbox generation, Nadella said Microsoft “wants to do something innovative in system architecture — for both console and PC.” He added that it’s amusing to see people still treat those two concepts as entirely separate:
«We built the console because we wanted to create the best PC that could be used for gaming. I’d like to revisit some of these commonly held assumptions».
Those remarks fuel rumors that the next Xbox will be a hybrid of console and PC, merging the performance of a computer with the simplicity of a console interface. President of Xbox Sarah Bond previously described the new device as “premium” and said it will deliver “a curated gaming experience.”
