“Michael” sequel could begin filming by the end of the year

Adam Fogelson, head of Lionsgate, has provided an update regarding the production timeline for the follow-up to the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael.

According to Fogelson, cameras are tentatively scheduled to begin rolling on the sequel in late 2026 or early 2027. The film is currently eyeing a theatrical release for the winter of 2027/28.

Plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, though it is widely anticipated that the narrative will delve into the legal battles and accusations of child sexual abuse that shadowed the pop star’s later years. Last year, the film’s final act underwent emergency reshoots following a lawsuit from Jordan Chandler, one of Jackson’s accusers, who successfully barred the use of his likeness. Unaware of the specific legal constraints, the production team was forced to overhaul that portion of the film entirely.

The original Michael, which premiered this past April, chronicled the early life and rise of the pop icon. The title role was portrayed by Jaafar Jackson, the nephew of the late legend.

The project secured its place as the highest-grossing biopic in history; despite mixed critical reception and behind-the-scenes controversies, it amassed a staggering $1.016 billion at the global box office. Domestic audiences in Russia alone contributed over 2 billion rubles to the film’s total revenue.
