“Michael” Ruled Ineligible for the Golden Globes
The Golden Globes organizers have rejected Lionsgate’s request to enter the biopic “Michael” in the comedy or musical categories. According to Variety, Antoine Fuqua’s film must now compete in the drama categories at the 2027 ceremony. The studio still has until October 31 to appeal the decision.
The committee determined that the film’s musical sequences do not meet the category’s criteria. Under the awards’ rules, a musical is a film in which songs do more than accompany the action and instead work alongside dialogue to move the story forward. In the organizers’ view, the performances in “Michael” recreate the singer’s concert numbers but do not serve the required narrative purpose. Director Antoine Fuqua sent the organizers a letter backing the submission, but it did not change the outcome.
Moving the film into the drama category could affect the awards campaign of Jaafar Jackson, who plays his uncle, Michael Jackson.
