“Clayface” Gets First Critic Reviews
DC Studios’ horror film Clayface has debuted with a 74% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 59 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics praised James Watkins’ film as a strong standalone body-horror picture, though they pointed to a flawed script and an uneven blend of genres.
Reviewers have singled out the visceral body horror, the many grotesque set pieces and the performance of Tom Rhys Harris in the lead role. Some critics note that the film offers an unusual take on a supervillain’s story for the DC universe, focusing on the hero’s physical and psychological disintegration.
Other reviewers feel the movie fails to live up to its potential. Their complaints include thinly drawn characters, a predictable plot, clumsy dialogue and a tragic element that lacks real conviction. Some critics also take issue with the tone, arguing that the mix of body horror and a villain origin story doesn’t always come together as a cohesive whole.
Clayface will be released internationally on October 23, 2026.
