The feline legion has successfully stormed Mount Olympus. Mewgenics, the tactical cat-breeding combat odyssey from creators Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, has officially ascended to become the most-played roguelike in Steam’s history, snatching the crown from the previous record-holder, Hades 2.

The title reached a staggering peak of 115,428 concurrent players on Sunday, February 15. This milestone narrowly eclipsed the former gold standard set by Hades 2, which saw 112,947 players during its own peak on September 28, 2025. Interestingly, both games achieved their historic highs on a Sunday, proving the weekends belong to the roguelite community.

For Edmund McMillen, this victory is also a personal best. The developer, renowned for the genre-defining The Binding of Isaac, saw Mewgenics shatter his previous record of 70,701 concurrent players (set by the Rebirth edition in 2021). The momentum was evident from the start; within twenty-four hours of its February 10 launch, Mewgenics had already surpassed the 80,000-player mark.

Unsurprisingly, these player counts have translated into a massive commercial windfall. Developer Tyler Glaiel confirmed that the game recouped its entire development budget in just three hours. By February 12, he took to social media to reveal that they had moved half a million copies in a mere 36 hours.

To put this achievement into perspective, most heavyweights in the genre—including the original Hades (54,240), Vampire Survivors (77,061), and the poker-inspired Balatro (43,905)—typically reside in the 40,000 to 80,000 player bracket. Even when compared to other viral animal-themed hits, Mewgenics stands alone; it nearly doubled the 62,963 peak recorded by the cyberpunk feline adventure Stray. It seems that when it comes to capturing the internet’s attention, the combination of tactical depth and an endless supply of furry companions is truly unbeatable.

Given the immense depth and hidden complexity McMillen is known for, players will likely be unearthing secrets for years to come. Whether Mewgenics can maintain this momentum to become a definitive Game of the Year contender for 2026 remains to be seen, but for now, the cats are firmly in control.
