Legend of Zelda Movie Cast List: Who Plays Link, Zelda and Ganondorf So Far

Nintendo is trying something it hasn’t done in more than 30 years: a live-action adaptation of its video games. Sony Pictures and Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda is slated for April 2027. It brings the fantasy role-playing franchise to the screen in a way nobody has seen before. The exception is one Japanese commercial for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past that featured a rapping Link.

Expectations are high after the back-to-back success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Sony Pictures and Nintendo picked Wes Ball to direct. Ball made The Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. He previously told Polygon he wants his version of Hyrule to feel “grounded” and “real,” without relying fully on motion-captured computer graphics.

Nintendo announced in September that the film will be called simply The Legend of Zelda. Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto explained the missing subtitle:

“Once you see the film, you’ll understand why there isn’t a subtitle. This is an original film based on the many stories, ideas, and concepts of the series built up through the games for 40 years.”

To keep the film grounded, Ball is shooting real actors in Hylian tunics and prosthetic elf ears. Nintendo has officially confirmed two leads, Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. The rest of the cast has surfaced through unofficial channels. Here is what we know so far.

Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced Ainsworth as Link in 2025. The 17-year-old British actor starred in Mike Flanagan’s Netflix horror series The Haunting of Bly Manor. He also voiced Pinocchio in Robert Zemeckis’ live-action remake of Pinocchio. Ainsworth appeared in season 3 of HBO’s House of the Dragon as Daeron Targaryen, another role in which he wore a green tunic and carried a sword.

Release and production

Nintendo announced the Zelda movie in 2023. It is partnering with Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Miyamoto and Hollywood veteran Avi Arad are producing. Miyamoto said in 2023 that he had been working on the film for “many years now.”
