As the broader tech landscape grapples with persistent component shortages and shifting economic pressures, Meta has announced an upcoming price adjustment for its Quest 3 virtual reality hardware.

New Pricing Structure

Effective Sunday, April 19, consumers will see an increase in the retail price for both the Meta Quest 3 and 3S units. The updated pricing tiers are as follows:

  • Meta Quest 3S (128 GB): $349.99 (previously $299.99)
  • Meta Quest 3S (256 GB): $449.99 (previously $399.99)
  • Meta Quest 3 (512 GB): $599.99 (previously $499.99)

Why Are Prices Increasing?

In an official statement, Meta attributed these hikes to the rising costs of manufacturing high-performance hardware. “The global spike in the cost of essential components—particularly memory chips—is impacting nearly every facet of consumer electronics, including VR. To maintain the standards of hardware quality, software performance, and platform support our users expect, we must adjust our pricing model accordingly,” the company noted.

It is important to note that this update extends to refurbished Meta Quest units. However, the pricing for official Meta Quest accessories will remain unchanged.

A Broader Industry Trend

Meta is the latest in a string of tech giants forced to hike prices due to market volatility, including import tariffs and component scarcity fueled by the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure. Similar adjustments have rippled across the gaming industry: Sony recently increased the cost of the PlayStation 5 and PS Portal for the second time in less than a year, while both Microsoft (Xbox Series X/S) and Nintendo have implemented their own pricing updates over the past two years. From high-end gaming desktops to portable handhelds, the entire PC hardware ecosystem continues to face significant inflationary pressure.
