Meet the Gears of War’s New Monster, the ‘Flying Testicle’ | Exclusive
As a prequel, Gears of War: E-Day ventures into uncharted territory, introducing several novel elements—most notably a peculiar biological threat affectionately dubbed the “flying testicle” by the development team, revealed here for the first time as part of our Fall 2026 Preview.
Naturally, that anatomical moniker is strictly internal slang. During our Gamescom 2026 interview, Gears of War brand director Nicole Fawcette used the phrase to describe the creature—prompting an immediate, humorous face-palm from a nearby Xbox representative. Formally known as the Spore Matron, this new adversary expands the franchise’s grotesque menagerie.
Slated for an October 6 release on Windows PC and Xbox Series X, Gears of War: E-Day is crafted by The Coalition and serves as the franchise’s first mainline installment since 2019’s Gears 5. While the original trilogy thrust players deep into a protracted war against the subterranean Locust horde, this prequel chronicles the harrowing genesis of the conflict—the exact moment the Locust breach the planet’s core on Emergence Day, or simply “E-Day.”
The Locust remain a terrifying collective of visceral, monstrous entities. Fawcette explains that the Spore Matron draws aesthetic inspiration from the iconic Gas Barge floating skull abominations from Gears of War 2. However, whereas the Gas Barge was composed entirely of skeletal armor, the Spore Matron is a fleshy, ten-foot-wide sphere that releases tracking spores players must gun down mid-air. Whether Fawcette’s initial description holds merit is best judged firsthand:
“It’s wonderfully twisted and darkly humorous in a way only *Gears* can pull off. When you encounter and fight it, your immediate reaction is absolute disbelief,” Fawcette remarked. “It strikes a brilliant balance, blending heavy, grim thematic undertones with wonderfully over-the-top characters, creatures, and quintessential sci-fi spectacle.”
Alongside the Spore Matron, classic adversaries are receiving substantial visual and mechanical upgrades in E-Day. Art director Aryan Hanbeck noted that the towering, heavy-weapon-wielding Boomer is now even more imposing.
“This is a reimagining of the classic Boomer. He towers at nine feet tall, boasts an even more massive frame, moves with deliberate heaviness, and essentially functions as a living tank,” Hanbeck explained.
Having survived encounters with multiple Boomers across both the campaign and Horde mode previews, this assessment is thoroughly validated.
Furthermore, E-Day elevates the Wretch—the Gollum-esque creature traditionally heralded by its distinct audio cues. While previous iterations utilized piercing sonic shrieks primarily to shatter nearby glass, E-Day applies a tangible disorienting effect directly to the player character.
“Those screams now directly impact gameplay mechanics,” Fawcette noted. “It takes a beloved element from the original games and makes every encounter significantly more immersive and layered.”
Based on our hands-on time, E-Day successfully retains the signature tactical weight and responsive cover mechanics that define the series while driving the franchise forward. It fills long-standing narrative voids, presenting the pristine urban landscape of Kalona to showcase a pre-fallout world. It details the fascinating origin of the legendary chainsaw assault rifle, highlights Marcus Fenix’s surprising flair for iconic styling, and yes, lets players face off against airborne monstrosities.
“It is fantastic,” Fawcette concluded. “There’s an abundance of incredible content.”
