Maul: Shadow Lord’s Essential Cameo Is From Star Wars’ Most Disappointing Movie

Premiering on Disney Plus this April, this animated journey follows Maul (voiced again by Sam Witwer) as he focuses on resurrecting his criminal empire from Janix, a secluded world “beyond the Empire’s reach.” We’ve previously seen Maul’s talent for leadership in The Clone Wars, where he forged the Shadow Collective by uniting disparate factions like the Pyke Syndicate, the Hutts, Black Sun, and Death Watch to challenge both the Republic and the Separatists.

However, the Shadow Collective collapsed shortly before Maul’s defeat at the hands of Ahsoka Tano on Mandalore. The timeframe following his escape from Republic custody is largely unexplored, but we know he instructed his remaining allies to retreat into the shadows. This is why I am convinced the series must feature a pivotal figure from Maul’s future: Dryden Vos.

If you were among the dedicated viewers who watched 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, you’ll remember the name. Played by Paul Bettany, Dryden Vos is a near-human aristocrat with distinctive facial scarring and a penchant for vibroblades. Introduced as the public leader of the Crimson Dawn syndicate, he served as a menacing antagonist for a young Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson).

The film eventually reveals that Dryden was merely a high-level proxy; his true master was Maul. Following Dryden’s death at the hands of Qi’ra (played by Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke), she assumes his position within the hierarchy. Aside from a fleeting appearance in Season 7 of The Clone Wars, where Dryden is shown as a rising enforcer within the Shadow Collective, we haven’t seen much of his history.

The beauty of Star Wars lies in its ability to enrich characters through non-linear storytelling. Maul: Shadow Lord takes place shortly after 2005’s Revenge of the Sith, representing the earliest look at Maul’s life since he fled the chaos of Order 66. As he attempts to rebuild his influence, it is logical that he would reconnect with the operatives who remained loyal during his transition from Sith apprentice to crime lord.

The teaser trailer has already confirmed the Pykes’ involvement, and it’s likely other syndicates will surface. We know from Solo that Maul and Dryden eventually become close partners, yet the origin of this bond remains a mystery. The Marvel comic Crimson Reign revealed that Maul shared Sith knowledge with Qi’ra and trained her to fight Force-sensitives. Was Dryden treated with the same level of investment, or was his role purely administrative?

Given the commercial struggles of Solo, Lucasfilm has been hesitant to revisit its specific plot threads. However, Bettany’s charismatic and ruthless portrayal of Dryden Vos left fans wanting to see the character’s ascent. While Maul is famous for cycling through apprentices, he only keeps those who prove their worth. Exploring the foundation of his trust in Dryden would provide excellent narrative depth. As Maul: Shadow Lord chronicles the Zabrak’s return to dominance, the inclusion of Dryden Vos would perfectly bridge the gap between the fall of the Republic and the height of Crimson Dawn’s power.
