Aaron Paul Mostly Cut From “Clayface,” Director James Watkins Explains Why
Aaron Paul was originally set to have a much larger part in the film.
DC Studios’ horror film Clayface opened worldwide last week, and it turns out that Aaron Paul, star of Breaking Bad, plays the father of the main character, Matt Hagen. Paul appears on screen for only a few moments, even though his role was originally far more prominent.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director James Watkins said Paul filmed several scenes that explored Matt’s past and the reasons behind his actions. Almost all of that material was cut during editing. Watkins decided not to dwell on the character’s family trauma and to focus on the more universal theme of revenge:
“But while working on the script, I came to the conclusion that the idea of revenge is more universal and closer to all of us.”

All that remains of Paul’s role is a brief cameo, which viewers still noticed. On Reddit, fans are already hoping the deleted scenes will appear in the digital release or in an extended cut. Some fans say the scenes with Paul would have helped show Matt’s relationship with his father and explain the character’s darker side, which they feel the theatrical version didn’t cover enough.
