Mass layoffs begin at Square Enix after the company reveals AI testing plans

Square Enix has initiated large-scale layoffs across its United States and United Kingdom operations. Media outlets report that over one hundred employees have been affected, and several staffers have confirmed the news on social platforms. A company representative said the restructuring is intended to “reinforce the development framework and establish a cohesive global marketing strategy.”

In an official statement, Square Enix said the move came “after a thorough review” and is designed to “secure the company’s long-term growth.” The publisher pledged to offer support to those departing and expressed gratitude for their contributions to the studio.

According to IGN, as many as 137 positions may be at risk in the UK, with comparable actions taken in the firm’s US offices. VGC reports that the cuts have affected nearly every department, including community teams.

At the same time, the company announced it will consolidate primary development in Japan and close several overseas studios. Square Enix also revealed plans to assign up to 70% of game testing and debugging tasks to artificial intelligence by 2027.

Earlier, company head Takashi Kiryu stated that Square Enix intends to actively expand its AI initiatives.
