Japanese publisher and developer Marvelous has officially announced Eternal Anima, an upcoming role-playing game boasting a striking aesthetic that channels the studio’s own distinct interpretation of Square Enix’s popular HD-2D visual style. The title is scheduled to make waves when it arrives on the Nintendo Switch 2 on March 4, 2027.

Set in a desolate realm nearly swallowed entirely by an endless ocean, Eternal Anima unfolds in a world where humanity has long since abandoned its collective wisdom and ambitions. According to the atmospheric narration in the debut trailer, the final remaining sanctuary of civilization—the sprawling metropolis of Urbis Ale—operates under one absolute decree: the pursuit of a brighter tomorrow is strictly forbidden. Enter Wade, the game’s protagonist, who defies this rigid dogma. Utilizing an enigmatic ability to unlock and experience forgotten memories from bygone eras, Wade catches glimpses of a vibrant world existing far beyond the city limits. Branded an outcast and a heretic for his defiance, he embarks on an unyielding quest for truth.

“By inheriting the echoes of the world’s past memories, you awaken the legendary powers of bygone heroes,” the trailer’s narrator explains, shedding light on the game’s mechanics. “Peer deep into the flow of turn-based combat to anticipate and calculate enemy movements, then disrupt their strategies to seize control of your own destiny. As you chase down the deepest secrets of this submerged planet, your journey will transcend time itself. Can you successfully redeem the past to liberate the present?”

Prepare to rewrite history when Eternal Anima launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on March 4, 2027.
