Marvel to Reverse Spider-Man One More Day Storyline
In 2007, Peter Parker made a deal with the demon Mephisto that changed reality in the story One More Day. Nearly twenty years later, that deal remains in effect and has shaped almost every Spider-Man story told since. Readers widely hate the comic story, but those dark days may finally be over.
In the pages of Captain America #16, author Chip Zdarsky has altered the status quo of the Marvel Universe. Doctor Doom has taken control of hell and declared that all contracts made with Mephisto are now null and void. That development could mean that One More Day is going to be reversed, or that Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson will remember their lives before Mephisto altered reality.

Captain America #16 includes a brief panel of Spider-Man sensing a disturbance and asking himself, “What’s — What’s happening?” Steve Rogers then narrates that because of his actions, “the world changed.” How this plays out in the immediate future remains to be seen, but Zdarsky is not done with the story.

How would reversing One More Day work in Marvel comics?
The simple summary of One More Day is that Peter Parker made a deal with Mephisto to save Aunt May when she was near death. In exchange for May’s life, Peter gave up his marriage to Mary Jane. That bargain rewrote canon, causing nobody to remember that Peter Parker was Spider-Man after the events of Civil War. Mary Jane and Peter were never married and were not together, Harry Osborn returned from the dead, and Aunt May survived. Because this has been canon for almost twenty years, unraveling it appears complicated.

Still, Zdarsky is interested in pulling on this thread in upcoming work. The author is set to write the new mainline Avengers book, which includes Spider-Man. Solicitations for the book show that the team will face Mephisto directly. During New York Comic Con, new Marvel editor-in-chief Steve Wacker teased a new project called “1 Day.” The logline states, “This June . . . Tomorrow is one day away. Save the date . . . because no one is promised the future.” The project appears to be a new line of books launching in June 2027. While unconfirmed, the teaser strongly evokes One More Day, signaling what could be the biggest shake-up in Marvel Comics in a long time.
