Marvel to Introduce New Wolverine Replacement

Just as characters in comic books never truly stay dead, Wolverine will star in any number of things at any given time. Even prior to Logan’s live-action debut in the 2000 X-Men movie courtesy of Hugh Jackman, the character was beloved by many as one of the most prominent mutants in the Marvel stable. Logan has been through hell and back throughout his existence, and now he faces his biggest threat yet in the form of his own replacements.

A villain in the Marvel Universe will soon attempt to replace Wolverine with four copies of himself. A recent batch of solicitations from Marvel reveals that four damaged mutants have been transformed into cheap but brutal knockoffs of Wolverine.

Wolverine is getting four brutal new replacements

The new characters make their presence felt in Uncanny X-Men #38, which marks the beginning of an all-new storyline by writer Gail Simone and artist Juan Frigeri. Marvel’s solicitation text explains that the four mutants are the result of experiments conducted in the labs beneath the former Graymalkin Prison. These experiments left them with powers that were already difficult to control before someone decided to make them even more dangerous.

Marvel has not revealed the exact identities of the four mutants or whether they are known to regular readers of Uncanny X-Men. However, the group is explicitly targeting a new ally of the team, which sets up a direct confrontation between Logan and the four mutants built to resemble him. The full solicitation text for Uncanny X-Men #38 outlines the conflict.

The monstrous experiments from the labs beneath the former Graymalkin Prison have borne twisted fruit as four damaged mutants have been made into cheap but brutal knockoffs of Wolverine himself! And they’re after a new ally of the Uncanny X-Men! Their powers were already out of control. But now they have claws.

The action then carries over into Uncanny X-Men #39. That issue follows the group as they express an interest in following in Wolverine’s footsteps, but only after ensuring he is out of the way for good.

This storyline presents a fitting threat for Wolverine, who has spent decades serving as a mentor to younger mutants ranging from Kitty Pryde to Jubilee.

Logan is not actually disappearing from Marvel Comics anytime soon. He maintains his own ongoing adventures and remains one of the most frequently used members of the X-Men franchise. Even so, four unstable mutants armed with Wolverine-style claws and a desire to remove the original from the equation pose the kind of problem that even Logan might struggle to slash his way through.

Uncanny X-Men #38 hits comic shop shelves on Nov. 4, followed by Uncanny X-Men #39 on Nov. 25.
