Marvel Rivals Officially Brings Avengers: Endgame’s Final Fight to Life
Thanos is about to face the biggest fight of his life. NetEase has released the first gameplay footage of Marvel Rivals‘ new “Path to Doomsday – Avengers: Endgame” PvE mode, and it throws 50 players against the Mad Titan at the same time. Heroes such as Captain America and Iron Man charge into Thanos’ army while he wields an enormous double-bladed sword that can wipe out his opponents in one hit. The setting loosely recreates the climactic showdown from Avengers: Endgame. Good and evil collide across a barren wasteland beside the ruins of Avengers Tower. In action, it resembles a multiplayer take on Dynasty Warriors.
One other change stands out: Thanos is now as tall as Giant-Man.
A 50-player PvE mode may seem out of place in a game known for six-versus-six matches, but NetEase Games has been working toward it for some time. The developer previously added a four-player PvE zombie mode, in which the undead horde behaves much like Thanos’ army of minions. Rivals also already offers a chaotic 18-versus-18 mode and the Times Square Hub, which can hold up to 100 players. Even so, mixing large-scale multiplayer with PvE should produce a whole new brand of mayhem. The mode arrives with the Season 10.5 update on Oct. 23.
What else is coming with Marvel Rivals Season 10.5?
Unfortunately, the upcoming update ends one of the game’s most impressive runs. For the first time in 17 months, a season will not bring two new heroes. Rivals has introduced a new character roughly every month for more than a year, with seasons typically lasting two months and a major update arriving at the midpoint. This time, NetEase has said Season 10 will include just one new hero, Gorr the God Butcher, so the team can concentrate on the many new modes in development.
Besides the 50-player Avengers: Endgame mode, Season 10 has already delivered “Path to Doomsday – Avengers: Infinity War,” in which six teams of two compete while collecting upgrades and Infinity Stones. A Halloween event called Night of Illusions, described as an “interactive puzzle,” is also on the way, though its details remain under wraps. The season additionally introduced the God Quarry map and a long list of new skins. NetEase has pledged that once Season 10 wraps up, it will return to its rapid cadence of about one new character per month.
Marvel Rivals is free to play on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is in development.
The next Avengers film, Avengers: Doomsday, opens in theaters on Dec. 18.
