Former Marathon Director Discusses Internal Disagreements at Bungie During Game’s Development
Ziegler left Bungie in July 2026, several months after Marathon’s release.
Former Marathon game director Joe Ziegler said Bungie staff had serious disagreements about the direction of the shooter during development. According to him, one of his main tasks after joining the team was to build a shared vision for the game.
In a new interview, Ziegler explained that he came to Bungie through former colleagues from Pandemic Studios, where he worked on The Saboteur. Together with former Bungie leader Justin Truman, he first worked on a different, unannounced project. The studio later needed help with Marathon, and Ziegler joined its development as a consultant.
In March 2024, he was offered the chance to lead the project after Christopher Barrett left the game director role.
When you join a project that is already in development, it’s important to bring everyone together and figure out what we are actually trying to achieve. Sometimes a team has a single shared understanding of its goals, and sometimes people’s ideas about the game’s future differ greatly. There was a lot of disagreement on Marathon.

According to Ziegler, the developers had their own ideas about which way to go. He therefore had to help the team align on goals and decide how to reach them. He believes it was hard to keep working on the game effectively without a shared understanding of where it was headed.
Ziegler also spoke positively about Bungie’s internal culture. He described the studio as open to new ideas and outside perspectives, despite the high expectations tied to its earlier games, including Halo and Destiny.
Marathon launched on March 5, 2026. Bungie later acknowledged that the shooter attracted fewer players than the developers had expected. The studio also said it intends to expand how players can interact with the game world and move beyond the usual extraction shooter formula.
Ziegler left Bungie in July 2026, several months after launch. Del Chafe III now leads Marathon’s development, while Ziegler is working on a new project that has not yet been announced.
