Fans of Critical Role and its diabolical adventuring party, The Mighty Nein, have plenty to enjoy right now. The animated series debuted in December 2025, and spin-off material has since expanded on the Campaign 2 cast. That includes novels like Critical Role: The Mighty Nein – Stories Untold and live-show one-shots like Projekt Funball.

Another story is on the way. Critical Role: The Mighty Nein – Children of the Empire is written by Nibedita Sen, a Hugo, Ignyte, and Nebula Award nominee, and published by Random House Worlds. It follows the “Empire Kids,” Caleb Widogast and Beauregard Lionett.

After facing powerful organizations and overwhelming odds, most of the Mighty Nein have decided to settle down and rest. Caleb and Beau still have old demons to face. They return to an empire they once called home, and the chaos and strife that follows.

Soon after they arrive, Caleb gets a chance to investigate the Cerberus Assembly and Ludinus Da’leth. He takes it, even though it may force him to betray people he once loved. Beau is struggling to settle into domestic life with her lover, Yasha. When she hears about the investigation, she tags along, hoping the sleuthing will distract her from her worries.

An exclusive excerpt from the novel centers on Beau and Yasha. Beau wonders whether she deserves the happiness she has found after years of travel and fighting, and Yasha reassures her of her worth.

The scene takes place on a training ground that Veth has stocked with wooden swords, a balance beam, and a climbing net. Yasha gathers a group of children for a demonstration and spars with Beau in front of them. Beau relies on speed and precision against Yasha’s much greater strength. As the fight wears on, her frustration and self-doubt surface, and Yasha tells her plainly that she is not too much.

Yasha also tells Beau she will never be her shackle, and Beau answers that Yasha is her wings. The scene ends with a kiss in front of the cheering and groaning kids. Beau then asks Yasha to marry her, and Yasha says yes.

Critical Role: The Mighty Nein – Children of the Empire by Nibedita Sen will be released on Nov. 10.
