Marvel Reveals New Doctor Strange Version Ahead of Avengers Doomsday

Doctor Strange has had an adventurous run in recent years within the pages of Marvel comics. He has ventured through space, died, returned to life, traveled to Asgard, and briefly teamed up with the Hulk. Doctor Strange travels to the Nightmare Realm this month in a new graphic novel from Abrams ComicArts and the Marvel Arts line.

In Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare, the Sorcerer Supreme contends with a world suddenly stricken by insomnia. To investigate this magical disaster, Doctor Strange must travel to the Nightmare Realm. “Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare explores the boundary between dreams and reality, combining forces with an unlikely ally in order to end a waking nightmare that threatens to destroy the world,” reads the official description.

The chaotic events begin with a mysterious hospital patient who raves about a slumbering god and claims the entire multiverse will be destroyed if it wakes. Preview pages show that early scene before the chaos unfolds.

Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare is written by Kevin J. Anderson with art by Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín. The trio previously collaborated with Brian Herbert on Abrams graphic novel adaptations of Dune.

The Marvel Arts line is curated by cover artist Alex Ross, whose Marvel Dimensions graphic novel was released on Tuesday. “Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín’s work presents a fully lived-in New York you feel like you can visit. Their use of Doctor Strange is as close as we’ll get to a contemporary Little Nemo in Slumberland, with the majesty of Winsor McCay’s art and storytelling. I am thrilled to have Kevin J. Anderson, Raúl, and Patricia part of the Marvel Arts line. Their combined artistry elevates the possibilities of the graphic novel format,” Ross said of Endless Nightmare.

“The character of Doctor Strange has access to so many bizarre realms, I wanted to introduce him to a dark and twisted Lovecraft-inspired story,” Kevin J. Anderson stated. “I brought in an important and popular villain in the Doctor Strange universe, as well as another villain who has never appeared since Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created him in 1964’s Dr. Strange #122. It was amazing to play in this universe.”

Though his potential on-screen return in Avengers: Doomsday remains unconfirmed, Doctor Strange appears next in Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare. The hardcover edition releases for $25.99 on Sept. 8.
