Markiplier’s Iron Lung Dominates the Box Office After Brief Chart Absence

The cinematic adaptation of Iron Lung has made an explosive debut at the box office, raking in an impressive $17.8 million during its opening weekend. The sci-fi horror film managed to surpass major titles such as Malenia, Zootopia 2, and Avatar: Fire and Ash. The only production that held its ground against the newcomer was Sam Raimi’s Send Help, which maintained its lead with $20 million in earnings.

Based on the 2022 indie hit by developer David Szymanski, Iron Lung tells the harrowing story of a convict trapped in a primitive, welded-shut submarine. Set in a universe where a cosmic event known as “the Quiet Rapture” has erased the stars and most of humanity, the protagonist is tasked with navigating an alien moon’s ocean of blood to scavenge for dwindling resources.

The film’s commercial success is largely attributed to the massive influence of Mark Edward “Markiplier” Fischbach. With a global audience of over 33 million YouTube subscribers, Fischbach has a proven track record of catapulting independent horror games into the mainstream. After featuring the original game on his channel in 2022, the creator took the ambitious leap to personally fund, write, direct, and star in the feature-length project.

Despite the financial win, the release hasn’t been without controversy. In a video shared on X, Fischbach highlighted a series of anomalies regarding the film’s box office tracking throughout the weekend.

Fischbach pointed out that while Iron Lung debuted at the number one spot on Friday, January 30, it appeared to be delisted from tracking charts over the following two days. While the film has since been restored to the rankings, fans were quick to voice suspicions of industry gatekeeping, suggesting that major distributors might be attempting to undermine the success of an independent production. The film’s presence in theaters was already a testament to fan power, as audiences had to lobby cinemas nationwide to secure screenings—a movement that has clearly yielded massive dividends.

Even with its brief disappearance from the charts and a polarizing critical reception, Iron Lung has already grossed significantly more than its sub-$3 million production budget. As Fischbach receives accolades for his daring creative transition, many are watching closely to see if this grassroots success will redefine the landscape for independent creators in Hollywood.
