New Resident Evil Film Nears $400 Million at Global Box Office as Director Discusses Sequel Plans

After six weeks in theaters, Zach Cregger’s new Resident Evil has earned $384.5 million worldwide. Of that total, $153.7 million came from the US and Canada, and international markets added $230.8 million.

China continues to contribute significantly. According to Variety and the analytics company Artisan Gateway, the film took in $5.6 million there over the weekend of October 23-25. That made it the top film at the local box office for the third weekend in a row. Since its premiere on October 5, Chinese audiences have spent $64.8 million on tickets.

The reboot is now the highest-grossing film in the franchise. It has passed Resident Evil: The Final Chapter with Milla Jovovich, which earned $314 million, and it is also the highest-grossing film of Cregger’s career. Given that success, the director is increasingly asked about a possible sequel. Cregger said he originally expected to make just one film, but he is now thinking about what could happen next:

“When I was making the film, I wasn’t thinking about that at all. I thought it would be one movie, and that was it. Now that it’s finished, I can’t help myself. That’s just how my brain works. I already have other ideas about what could happen. My next project is already set, and it’s not ‘Resident Evil.’ I’m going to make something else. But after that, who knows? Who can say? Anything could happen.”

Cregger’s next film will be the sci-fi thriller Flood, starring Jennifer Lawrence. Even if the new Resident Evil gets a sequel, he could only start work on it after he finishes Flood.
