The Avengers star Mark Ruffalo is set to headline the new project Santo Subito!, from French director Bertrand Bonello (Premonition), Variety reports.
The title alludes to the cry “santo subito”—invoked by Catholic pilgrims at a pope’s funeral in the Vatican. The story follows American priest Joseph Murolu, who is tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005.
The screenplay was written by Toma Bidegen (Emilia Pérez). Filming is scheduled to begin in March 2026, with locations in Italy and Poland. Ruffalo most recently appeared in the HBO miniseries “The Assignment”.
