Bungie has officially announced that the second season of its extraction shooter, Marathon, titled “Nightfall,” is set to launch on June 2. Before the transition, the developer has outlined the final stretch of Season 1, providing essential details regarding impending progression resets and gameplay refinements.
In the lead-up to the June 2 transition, Bungie is escalating the activity of UESC security forces across the game’s various maps. With the arrival of update 1.0.9 this Tuesday, players can expect guaranteed locked room key drops from Wardens, alongside a consistent rotation of high-value map events—including Intercept, Lockdown, Convoy, and Anomaly—ensuring more frequent access to top-tier rewards.
Additionally, new Warden combat encounters will appear in key zones such as Perimeter, Dire Marsh, and Outpost, accompanied by increased UESC activity. Bungie has also cryptically teased a “new threat” emerging in the Dire Marsh intended to disrupt Runner operations.
For those looking to tackle Marathon’s premiere endgame challenge, the Cryo Archive, the map will be accessible daily from May 21 through June 2, moving away from its previous weekend-only rotation. To assist players in these final runs, Bungie is providing a daily “Cryo Archive Sponsored Kit” via the in-game mailbox. Furthermore, faction experience gains have been significantly boosted for the remainder of the season to help players maximize their ranks.
Understanding the Seasonal Reset
Season 2 will introduce a comprehensive reset to ensure all players begin on an even playing field. While gameplay progress will be wiped, your hard-earned achievements, permanent Codex milestones, and cosmetics will remain untouched. Notably, Reward Passes will persist, allowing you to continue your current progress into the new season.
What Will Be Reset
- Runner and Ranked progression levels
- Faction standing and associated upgrades
- General credits and inventory/Vault contents
- Schema-based unlocks and mailbox messages
- Select Priority Contracts and gear-linked seasonal Codex entries
What Will Carry Over
- All unlocked cosmetics and weapons
- Codex challenge progress (excluding Ranked/Runner levels)
- Faction access status and initial Priority Contract completion
- LUX and SILK currency balances
- Ongoing Rewards Pass progress
Bungie will also distribute special CyberAcme Sponsored Kits at the start of Season 2, with rarity tiers based on your final Season 1 Runner Level (reaching up to Level 75 for the Deluxe and Superior kits).
Looking ahead, Season 2: Nightfall promises to introduce the Night Marsh zone, an expanded arsenal, a sophisticated “Cradle” system for customizing shell stats, and numerous quality-of-life improvements. A comprehensive deep dive into the new season is expected the week of May 25.
